Eragon: by Christopher Paolini

Posted by reevesy101 on September 11, 2009

Eragon is a story about a 15-year-old guy named Eragon who lives outside the village of Carvahall in Alegasia about 1000 years ago. One day he finds a dragon egg while out hunting. Soon the dragon hatches and Eragon becomes a Rider. The storyteller Brom finds out and takes Eragon away from the evil Razac. They cross all of Alegasia to the Beor Mountains. The dwarves live there. Eragon then Fights a huge battle with Galbatorixes urgals [Galbatorix is an evil king]. He and the dwarves and rebel men win.

I loved this book it was very well written. I don’t have any connections with this book because I’m not a magical dragon rider. The only vocab that really sticks out is when they say a number avove 20  they say for example five and forty instead of forty five.

The Giver by Lois Lowry

Posted by gears97 on September 11, 2009

The Giver is  about a boy named Jonas who lives in a special community. He has parents, a little sister named Lily, and two friends named Asher and Fiiona. Their world is perfect as far as they are aware. They do not know of any bad things or that evil exists. Everyone has food, work, and the things that they need, and all live in cooperation and peace. This is called utopia. But at age 12, Jonas is selected for a special job called the receiver of memories. Now Jonas will know human suffering and pain as he is taught the memories from the giver in the community. He is the one that has these memories. Unfortunately, Jonas’ peaceful life is gone as he learns about the real world. He later tries to escape this fake world as he believes it to be.  I did not like this book as it wasn’t that exciting and is hard to understand at times. I believe it is a confusing book for a young person and you aren’t sure of the story’s ending as far as what happens to Jonas. I think that Jonas may live though.

Pitcher Sucess

Posted by djd77 on September 6, 2009

This year in the MLB I feel like every starting pitcher that has been moved from another team is having more sucess with their new team than their old team. Especially for the Red Sox they had released both John Smoltz and Brad Penny recently and they were both signed. Smoltz is 1-1 in 3 starts with an 2.65 ERA during 17 innings pitched. For Brad Penny he is 1-0 with no ERA in 1 start with 8 innings pitched. Also, Jose Contreras who was traded to the Rockies from the White Sox had a quality start last night for the Rockies.

Missing May By: Cynthia Rylant

Posted by beachblonde23 on September 3, 2009

Missing May is a story about a girl named Summer who after her mom dies gets pushed around from aunt to uncle. But when May and Ob come to Ohio to visit relatives they see Summer at the dinner table and she is so shy. May says to Ob, “Ob, we’ve got to take that girl home with us- and so they did.

It was 6years later and May had died in her garden (she was a big women). Then suddenly when Cletus comes along (he just moved into the area) he helps Ob and Summer get on with lives, but still remember May.

I thought this book was very well written and a very interesting book. I loved this book because it was unique, sad and filled with humor. My favorite character I think would definitely be Summer because she had a very dry sense of humor and that’s what made the book funny. I would rate this book 5 stars because it kept me interested and I thoroughly enjoyed the book the whole way through.

Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke

Posted by marlinsrock0911 on August 28, 2009

Dragon Rider starts out in a valley somewhere in Scotland. But this is no ordinary valley. This valley is home to dragons! But the dragons are being threatened by their one true enemy, mankind. The scout for the dragons, Rosa the Rat told them that the human bulldozers were coming. One brave dragon named Firedrake volunteered to take a bownie named sorrel with him to the Rim of Heaven a place fabled to house the oldest dragons in the world. Firedrake and Sorrel set off to find a mapmakeker named Gilbert Greytail, Rosa’s cousin. While in search for Gilbert, The dragon and the brownie find a boy named Ben who would love to come with them. Ben has no home so Firedrake was happy to take him on the quest. At that time Nettlebrand the golden One was having his scales polished by his trusty homnculus Twigleg. Then one of Nettlebrand’s spies came to tell him that a silver dragon came to ask him where they where. Nettlebrand was delighted, because the hunt was on!

Holes

Posted by fastball15 on August 25, 2009

The book holes is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats whose family was cursed because of his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather. Because of his bad luck he is convicted of a crime he did not do, so he gets sent away to Camp Green Lake were there is no lake. At Camp Green Lake they dig holes to build character and Stanley is placed in tent D with X-Ray, Squid, Magnet, Armpit, Zigzag, and Zero. One day he finds a tube of lipstick with the initials KB on it so he gives it to X-Ray so he can have the day off. That same day the warden of the camp makes tent D look through the dirt so they will not miss any thing. This gives Stanley  the impression that the warden is looking for something.

I can not relate to Stanley because I am really Lucky and he has bad luck. There was no interesting vocabulary in this book that I could find. I would rate this book a 7 because it was not the best book I have ever read before,  but it described the camp very well and it had a good plot.
